Wat Pho วัดโพธิ์

or Wat Phra Chetuphon วัดพระเชตุพน
as it is generally known to the Thais, is mainly famous for the huge Reclining Buddha statue it houses. At 20 acres large, it is the largest Wat in Bangkok, and is technically the oldest too, as it was built around 200 years before Bangkok became Thailand's capital. However, today the Wat today bears virtually no resemblance to that originally constructed, as it was almost entirely rebuilt by Rama I when the capital was moved to Bangkok. It holds the dual honors of having both Thailand's largest reclining Buddha image and the most number of Buddha images in Thailand.

The highly impressive gold plated reclining Buddha is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, and is designed to illustrate the passing of the Buddha into nirvana. The feet and the eyes are engraved with mother-of-pearl decoration, and the feet also show the 108 auspicious characteristics of the true Buddha.

The large grounds of Wat Pho contain more than 1000 Buddha images in total, most from the ruins of the former capitals Ayuthaya and Sukhothai. The grounds are split in two by Chetuphon road. The northern section is generally the only one most people go to, and it includes a large bot (temple hall), enclosed by 394 bronze Buddha images. Outside the bot, there are 152 marble slabs depicting the second half of the epic Ramakian story. Also near here are fourGrounds of Wat Pho chedis, constructed to honor the first three Chakri kings (two for King Rama III). There are also a massive 91 others Chedis of varying sizes arounds the grounds, along with chapels, rock gardens, an array of different types of statues, inscriptions, belltowers and resident fortune tellers. The library is nearby too, decorated impressively with figures and pagodas made of porcelain, in much the same way as Wat Arun across the river. The much less visited southern section has less of interest, but makes a good place to find a monk to chat to for a while. Most would welcome the chance to practice their English on visitors.

Massage - Wat Pho is also famous as Thailand's first university, and is center for traditional Thai masage - the rich, famous and powerful have all been known to come here. Inscribed on stone in the walls of Wat Pho are all that was known about Thai massage dating from the reign of King Rama III (most previous texts were lost when the Burmese destroyed Ayuthaya)

To get a traditional massage here costs 150B for 30 mins, 250B for an hour and herbal massages are available at 350B an hour. If you want to experience traditional Thai massage, this is probably the best place available and is highly recommended, though be aware that it's not exactly a gentle experience. A foot reflexology massage is also available at 250B for 45 minutes.

It is also possible to take courses to learn traditional Thai massage. These are for 30 hours and cost 4,500B. Courses can be spread over either 10 or 15 days. The massage center is situated at the back of the Wat, the opposite side from the entrance. To get a massage, simply turn up here and wait in line until a masseur is available - perhaps 10 or 20 minutes in the quieter periods in the early morning and late afternoon. The Feet of the Reclining Buddha, Wat PhoDetails

The entrance to Wat Pho is on Chetuphon road. Entrance is 20B. It's open every day, opening hours are from 08.00am to 5.00pm, with a break from 12.00pm to 1.00pm. Guides can be hired at the entrance for 150B for one person, 200B for two, 300B for three, but they're not really needed. On Sundays, you can see students being taught traditional Thai dance and music.


Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho: The famous reclining Buddha at Wat Pho is the largest Buddha statue in all Thailand. The Wat is also the largest in Thailand and the one with the most Buddha Statues. It is also considered the birthplace of Thai Massage.

Don't listen to anyone on the street as you try to enter telling you it's closed for a 'Buddhist holiday', 'cleaning' etc, or asking if you want to see the 'Lucky Buddha' instead - it's all part of a sophisticated gem scam.

Aircon buses 6, 8 and 12 all stop close to Wat Pho, and the Tha Tien express boat pier is very near. Ordinary buses that go near Wat Pho are ordinary buses 1, 25, 44, 47, 62 and 91 which stop on Maharat road. 44, 47 and 91 all stop on
Thaiwang road, on the north side of Wat Pho, south of Wat Phra Kaew.
It's also just a short river crossing away from Wat Arun. It's within walking distance of Wat Phra Kaew / Grand Palace, and (if you're feeling energetic) the National Museum too.

Nakhon Pathom นครปฐม

Nakhon Pathom, นครปฐม, is one of the central provinces, changwat of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi, Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi.

C'est ici que le bouddhisme fut introduit dans le pays. La province accueille plusieurs lieux saints, parcs à thèmes, centres de loisirs, et musées.

The province features an ancient religious structure called “Phra Pathom Chedi”, the first religious landmark that signified the influx of Buddhism into Thailand. Nakhon Pathom is also renowned for its abundant fruits varieties and famous dishes.

Nakhon Pathom is a small province located just 56 km from Bangkok. It is located in the alluvial plain of central Thailand. It is drained by the Tha Chin River (also called Nakhon Chaisi river), a distributary of the Chao Phraya river. The urban area of Bangkok has already grown until the provincial borders to Nakhon Pathom.

The name Nakhon Pathom derives from the Pali Nagara Pathama, meaning First city, and is thus often referred as the oldest city of Thailand. It was already an important center during the Dvaravati kingdom from the 6th century until the 11th century, however it might even be older. Some historians speculate it dates back to the 3rd century BC, when Buddhist missionaries from India visited there.

Originally Nakhon Pathom was a coastal city, however due to the sedimentation of the Chao Phraya river the coast line moved away from the city. When the Tha Chin river changed its course, the city was removed from water and was deserted, the population moved to the new city of Nakhon Chaisi (or Sirichai). King Mongkut (Rama IV) moved the population back to the old city in 1870, after the restoration of Phra Pathom Chedi was finished.

Major movements of people into Nakhon Pathom province included emigration during and after the reign of King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (Rama II) of Khmer villages (eg., Don Yai Hom village) Lanna (Baan Nua) and Lao Song villages (eg., Don Kanak village) as well as a major influx of Southern Chinese throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. Currently Nakhon Pathom is attracting migration from other parts of Thailand, notably Bangkok and the Northeastern Thai and Burmese migrant workers.

Administrative divisions

The province is subdivided into 7 districts (amphoe). The districts are further subdivided into 105 communes (tambon) and 919 villages (muban). There is one city (thesaban nakhon) and 14 townships (thesaban tambon). There are also 102 tambon administrative organizations (TAO).

Principaux centres d'intérêt

Phra Pathom Chedi

Le chédi ne manque pas d'impressionner par sa masse imposante. C'est une des plus grandes pagodes de Thaïlande et du monde, avec ses 12,043 mètres de haut, et 23,475 mètres de largeur totale à la base. Le musée voisin possède un grand nombre de précieuses reliques et d'objets provenant des fouilles dans les environs.

Wat Phra Ngam

Ce temple est situé près de la gare de chemins de fer de Nakhon Pathom. Dans l'enceinte du temple se trouve un grand monticule, vestige peut-être d'un monument datant de la même époque que le chédi de Nakhon Pathom.

Wat Phra Men

Ce temple, situé au sud du Phra Pathom Chedi, pourrait dater de la même époque. Des statues de Bouddha, de différentes tailles, ont été découvertes, ainsi que des reliefs en stuc, provenant du stupa. Ces objets sont maintenant exposés à Bangkok au Musée National et à Wat Phra Prathon Chedi.

Phra Prathon Chedi

Il est situé sur la voie express Phetkasem, avant d'entrer dans la ville. Selon la légende, cette pagode a été construite sur ordre de Phra ya Phan, en hommage à sa grand-mère qu'il avait tuée, et pour expier son crime.

Palais Sanam Chandra

Cet espace d'environ 180 ha abrite un ensemble de salles du trône, et de pavillon, à l'architecture assez curieuse mélant styles classique français, Tudor, et Thaï.
Deux bâtiments sont ouverts au public : le Phra Tamnak Chali Mongkon At, de style européen, dans lequel se trouve une statue de Ya Le, le chien du roi, et Phra Tamnak Mali Ratchabanlang, où sont exposé les objets personnels du roi Rama VI, des portraits de la famille royale et des oeuvres littéraires. Tout près se tient une maison de style Thaï, appelée "Tamnak Thap Khwan" qui fut autrefois une des résidences du roi Rama VI. Le palais se trouve à 2 kilomètres à l'ouest de Phra Pathom Chedi.

The Rose Garden Country Resort

Ce vaste domaine admirablement bien aménagé, situé à 32 kilomètres à l'ouest de Bangkok, est ouvert au public tous les jours de 8h à 18h. Un village Thaï a été reconstitué dans ce complexe, et chaque jour, un spectacle y est donné à 14h45, pour faire connaître les danses traditionnelles des différentes régions du pays, les arts martiaux, et le travail des éléphants.

Zoo & parc des éléphants Sam Phra N

Situé à un kilomètre de Rose Garden, c'est un espace d'environ 12 ha où vivent différentes espèces d'animaux sauvages, notamment des milliers de crocodiles, dont le plus grand crocodile albinos du monde. Il est ouvert tous les jours, de 8h30 à 17h 30. Une promenade dans ce complexe donne l'occasion de visiter la pépinière d'orchidées et de faire une randonnée à dos d'éléphant (seulement le matin).

Wat Rai Khing

Situé sur la rive de Nakhon Chai Si à Amphoe Sam Phra n, il abrite une statue de Bouddha très vénérée. Une fête est donnée annuellement en avril pour lui rendre hommage. Le temple est ailleurs réputé pour le sanctuaire naturel où vivent plusieurs centaines de mille de poissons.

Musée des images de l'homme

Situé à 31 kilomètres sur la voie express Pinklao Nakhon Chai Si, le musée abrite des sculptures grandeur nature, en fibre de verre d'anciens monarques, de religieux, et de personnages du monde rural. Ouvert tous les jours, le mercredi, de 9h à 17h30, le week-end et les jours fériés de 8h30 à 18h.

Marché Don Wai

C'est le pays d'une communauté fascinante, qui s'est installée à l'époque où Nakhon Chai Si, se trouvait au bord de la mer. La population qui a beaucoup changée au fil du temps, maintient les anciens modes de vie du monde rural. On y accède par le chemin qui conduit au temple Wat Rai Khing.

Excursion sur la rivière à Sam Phra N

De l'embarcadère situé près de la mairie de Sam Phra n les pirogues promènent les visiteurs le long de la rivière Nakhon Chai Si, et de quelques canaux. Outre les scènes champêtres, les visiteurs apprécieront les promenades dans les vergers, les fermes d'orchidées, et la maison thaï où l'on confectionne tous les jours des gâteaux.

Phuttha Monthon

Le Bouddha et le jardin botanique sont situés à 16 kilomètres environ à l'ouest de Bangkok. Ce complexe sur plus de 5 000m² a été érigé pour commémorer l'illumination de Bouddha survenue il y a 2500 ans environ. Il est dominé par une statue en bronze de Bouddha marchant, de 18,5 mètres. C'est le plus haut Bouddha du monde.

Let's face it. Coffee can be confusing. Everyone knows what coffee is, but far fewer people are familiar with even the most basic details of espresso. Hell, even the word -espresso- is a little disturbing for some people. With that in mind, here are a few basic pointers on what's what in the espresso world. Expect much more in the future on this subject.

- Espresso: concentrated coffee hot - not boiling - finely ground coffee + water under high pressure through a coffee filter
- Macchiato: Espresso with a spoonful of milk foam on top, contrary to popular belief, a macchiato it is not an espresso style - Starbucks - with caramel above
- Cubano: Espresso brewed with raw sugar
- Latte: Espresso 30% + hot milk foam 70%
- Cappuccino: Espresso 50% + hot milk foam 50% Originally from a cappucin's Italian convent in the 15th century.
- Mocka: A latte with chocolate!
- But the origin of the name Mocka coffee comes from our Italian grandmothers because of the coffee machine boiler called -mocka -
- Americano: Double espresso with hot water
- Café au lait: French appelation of Cappuccino

Hua Hin vintage car parade by Sofitel centara grand resort and villas together with Hua Hin hotelier's club and vintage car club of Thailand, support by Hua Hin tourism authority of Thailand and Hua Hin municipality. Hua Hin vintage car parade on 12th and 13th December 2008

Many activities during the two days event will take place at the Sofitel centara grand resort and villas in Hua Hin.

Fifty vintage cars will join the parade this year on Friday 12th December 2008 at 8 a.m. from the Sofitel centara grand, Bangkok. They will be heading off on a 225 kilometers journey to Sofitel centara grand resort and villas, Hua Hin, with stops along the way at several local attractions.

At around 5.30 p.m. the vintage car parade will tour Hua Hin city. All participants will be dress up in fancy costumes .

The aim of this year event is to assist in creating destination awareness, product and brand loyalty and to display the magnificent vintage cars. All proceeds generated from the event will be donated to the Chaipattana foundation.

On 5 December 2008, His Majesty the King will celebrate his 81st birthday anniversary. His Majesty has therefore announced that this special event be known as -the Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King 81st Birthday Anniversary 5th December 2008.

An alms-giving ceremony in the morning is followed by a huge festival of music and culture at sanam luang in Bangkok to celebrate His Majesty the King's birthday. You can also appreciate the beauty of the decorations along ratchadamnoen avenue in Bangkok, the beauty of the decorations along the walking steet in Hua hin, King's residence town, will be continue until the end of december.

Ce chedi [1]date de l'introduction du bouddhisme en Thaïlande, il y a plus de 2 000 ans.


Chedi Phra Pathom: Nakhon Pathom possède le monument bouddhiste le plus haut du monde avec plus de 120 mètres

Le monument, a été construit au III^e siècle avant notre ère.
À partir du VI^e siècle, le site a prospéré et est devenu la capitale du peuple Môn, dont l'empire Dvaravati a dominé le centre de la Thaïlande jusqu'au XIII^e siècle.
Au début du XI^e siècle, Nakhon Pathom est intégrée à l'empire khmer. Le chedi a été fortement endommagé durant cette période. La ville a ensuite été abandonnée après un bref passage aux mains des Birmans, en 1078. Le chedi a vu son importance reconnue en 1860, par le roi Mongkut, 1804-1868, qui le fit conserver et restaurer.
La splendeur de l'architecture thaïlandaise et l'activité religieuse se marient dans ce lieu sacré. Le chedi se niche dans la végétation luxuriante, des arbres en fleurs, des arbres fruitiers, jaquiers, des arbres saints, banians...
Le Phra Pathom Chedi est considéré contre le plus sacré et le plus vénérable du pays. Il est entouré d'un riche ensemble d'édifices composé d'un bot [2], de bouddhas ainsi que de vingt-quatre cloches que les pélerins font sonner. Un trident en or, symbole du dieu hindou Shiva, surmonte la tour, de même que la couronne royale de la Thaïlande qui lui confère ainsi un statut national.

La ville s'animant autour de ce centre et des marchés, trouve son calme et sa sérénité non loin de là, aux abords du parc du musée du palais d'été du roi Rama VI, Phra Tamnak - Sanam Chandra Palace.

[1] Le Wat, le temple, est le lieu où sont ordonnés prêtres et nonnes.
Généralement, le temple est composé d'une chapelle et d'un wihan, la grande salle du temple accueillant les statues de Bouddha.
À l'intérieur du wat, on trouve le chedi ou stûpa - mot sanscrit, en forme de cône, posée sur une sorte de pyramide composée de degrés carrés ou arrondis
Prévu pour accueillir des reliques sacrées de Bouddha, les chedi reçurent les dépouilles des rois et des saints.

[2] Le bot est un lieu de réunion rectangulaire.

[3] Le wihan est un édifice qui abrite une salle d'assemblée secondaire où les fidèles rendent hommage aux effigies de Bouddha. Il s'agit d'une sorte de chapelle qui sert également de salle de sermons pour les moines et les simples fidèles.

Phra Nakhon พระนคร is one of the 50 districts - Khet - of Bangkok, Thailand. It is the central district of Bangkok, including the Rattanakosin Island. Neighboring districts are Dusit, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Samphanthawong, and across the Chao Phraya River Thon Buri, Bangkok Yai, Bangkok Noi and Bang Phlat.

Phra Nakhon was also the name of the Bangkok province, until it was merged in 1972 with Thonburi to form the present day Bangkok metropolis.


Wat Pho วัดโพธิ์, also known as Wat Phra Chetuphon วัดพระเชตุพน: Wat Pho วัดโพธิ์, also known as Wat Phra Chetuphon วัดพระเชตุพน or The Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is a Buddhist temple in Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok, Thailand, located in the Rattanakosin district directly adjacent to the Grand Palace. Its official full name is Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม ราชวรมหาวิหาร. The temple is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.

Location

The district is bounded by the Chao Phraya river to the west, the Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem in the north, and Ratchadamnoen road and Khlong Ong Ang to the east. The center of Bangkok, marked by the city pillar shrine , Lak Mueang, , is located in the district. Also surrounding the large free space of the Sanam Luang are the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the National Museum in the former palace of the Vice King, and the main campus of the Thammasat University as well as the Silpakorn University. Also the temple Wat Mahathat is located there, though being one of the most important buddhistic temples in bangkok it is not really touristical attractive.
Other significant landmarks in the district include Wat Pho, the Giant Swing and Wat Suthat, Wat Ratchanadda , with Loha Prasat, and the Democracy Monument. Also the well-known Khaosan Road is located in the district. Another significant temple is Wat Bowonniwet, where several of the Thai kings had been ordained as monk.

Of the original 14 forts protecting Bangkok only two survive - Fort Phra Sumen in the northern corner of the district, and Fort Mahakan in the east of the district. Since 2000 a small park named Santichaiphrakarn around Fort Phra Sumen was built.

In 2005 the complete river front of the Phra Nakhon district - from the King Rama I Bridge , Memorial Bridge, in the south till the Wasukri Pier , Dusit district, - was submitted to the UNESCO for consideration as a future world heritage site.

Another landmark is Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre on Charoen Krung Road. It is Bangkok's oldest cinema and was the first air-conditioned theater in Thailand. Built on the order of King Prajadhipok and named by him, it was opened on July 2, 1933. It is the only theater from the first "golden age" of Thai cinema still standing. No longer regularly showing movies, the theater has been renovated and is principally used for Thai dance performances.[1] Another point of interest is the Pak Khlong Talat flower market.

Phahurat Road , พาหุรัด,

The area around Phahurat Road , พาหุรัด, can be considered as Thailand's Little India. The road was constructed during King Chulalongkorn's Reign over a century ago and Indian community started to formed after that. Siri Guru Singh Sabha, the Thailand's first sikh temple was built in 1933 nearby the road. The area is well-known for Indian fabric shops and Indian cuisines.

Songkran festival

the traditional Thai New Year, is celebrated throughout the country during 13 to 15 April of each year. Khao San Road , or Khao Sarn Road, inside Phra Nakhon district is one notable place to celebrate the event where lots of people, both locals and tourists, come and splash water.

Loy Krathong

Another famous festival, Loy Krathong, on the 15th day of 12th lunar month, the Chao Phraya river bank in the district, with numerous piers and Phra Sumen fort, is a popular place to come and float lanterns in the water.

Ratchadamnoen Road

is often heavily decorated with lights around King's birthday , 5 December, and Queen's birthday , 12 August, and other major anniversaries. Sanam Luang and recently created Lan Plabpla Maha Chedsada Bodin , ลานพลับพลามหาเจษฎาบดินทร์, in front of Wat Ratchanadda and its Loha Prasat are open spaces that frequently used to celebrate various events.

History

Phra Nakhon was once an amphoe named Amphoe Chana Songkhram , อำเภอชนะสงคราม, . This administration was overhauled on 15 October 1915 when 25 new amphoes were erected covering the inner part of Bangkok. On 12 March 1928, six of these amphoes, Amphoe Phahurat, Amphoe Samran Rat, Amphoe Phra Ratchawang, Amphoe Chana Songkhram, Amphoe Sam Yot, and Amphoe Bang Khun Phrom were merged to form Amphoe
Phra Nakhon. It became Khet Phra Nakhon in 1972.

Built in 1910 on the bank of Bangbon Canal, the community temple of Bangbon Tai or south Bangbon was formerly called Wat Mai-Ta-Cheuy after its founder, Ta Cheuy whose name was carved on the arch of the door to the ubosot, before King Rama VI granted it the official name of Wat Bangbon.

Luangphor Gaysorn or Phra Baromsrisukot Udomprotshinkul Budhaboromborpit: A Sukhothai style Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture copied from Luangphor Gaysorn of Wat Taphra in Thonburi. This Buddha image was made at Wat Ratchaorasaram and transported by boat. However, the boat was unable to pass under the raised bridge, so the image had to continue its journey overland.

is one of the 50 districts - Khet - of Bangkok, Thailand. Its neighbor are Bang Khae, Phasi Charoen, Chom Thong, and Bang Khun Thian districts of Bangkok, Amphoe Mueang and Amphoe Krathum Baen of Samut Sakhon Province, and Nong Khaem of Bangkok.

Formerly, Bang Bon was a tambon of amphoe Bang Khun Thian in Thon Buri province, prior to the joining of Thon Buri and Phra Nakhon into a single province, after which it was a sub-district of Bang Khun Thian district.

On October 14, 1997, Bang Bon was split from Bang Khun Thian and established as a new district, and the district office opened on March 6, 1998. Its district office was the last office of Bangkok's 50 districts to open, first established temporarily at the Thepphayada Arak Fresh Market building, but later moved to a permanent location at 1 Ekachai Soi 135/1 (Suea To) on Ekachai Road.

Agriculture is an important part of the area economy. Among Bang Bon famous products are Nam Dok Mai mangos, coconuts, orchids and lotus.

Wat Ratchaburana วัดราชบุรณราชวรวิหาร

This temple is located at the foot of the Rama I Memorial Bridge on the Bangkok side. Built in the late Ayutthaya period by a Chinese merchant, it is otherwise known as Wat Liap and is one of the 3 principal temples of the capital which include Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Ratchapradit and Wat Mahathat. It had been regularly restored since the reign of King Rama I through to the reign of King Rama VII, except in the sixth reign. Some of the temple's principal buildings, especially Phra Ubosot - the ordination hall - which houses mural paintings by Khrua In Khong, were badly damaged by bombing during World War II. The buildings were later restored to their good condition as they appear today.

is one of the 50 districts - Khet - of Bangkok, Thailand. The district is bounded by other Bangkok districts: Thawi Watthana, Taling Chan, Phasi Charoen, Bang Bon, and Nong Khaem. As of 2004, it has the highest population of all districts in Bangkok.

Formerly, Bang Khae was a tambon of amphoe Phasi Charoen, Thon Buri province.

In 1972, Thon Buri and Phra Nakhon provinces were combined into Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, and Bang Khae became a sub-district of the Phasi Charoen district of the newly combined province. Although subdivisions of the capital city remained the same at the time, the names for the administrative units used within the city were renamed as district (khet) and sub-district (kwaeng), replacing amphoe and tambon, respectively.

Later, due to population increases in the western area of Phasi Charoen district, a new district, Phasi Charoen Sakha 1, was created, comprising Bang Khae, Bang Khae Nuea and Bang Phai sub-districts.

On November 18, 1997, Phasi Charoen Sakha 1 district was combined with Lak Song sub-district, formerly part of Nong Khaem district, to form a new district, called Bang Khae. The sub-districts of the new Bang Khae district then consisted of Bang Khae, Bang Khae Nuea, Bang Phai and Lak Song.

On 6 March 1998, the four sub-districts of Bang Khae were reorganized for administrative purposes, although the boundaries of the district itself did not change.

Bangkok Noi บางกอกน้อย

is one of the 50 districts - Khet - of Bangkok, Thailand. Neighboring districts are Bang Phlat, Phra Nakhon, across Chao Phraya River, Bangkok Yai, Phasi Charoen, and Taling Chan.

Bangkok Noi was established as an amphoe on 15 October 1915. Originally named Amphoe Amarin, it was renamed on 11 July 1916 to Amphoe Bangkok Noi to match with the historical name of the area. It became a khet in 1972 when Thonburi and Bangkok were merged together. Later on 9 November 1989 the Bang Phlat district was created from four of Bangkok Noi's sub-districts, leaving Bangkok Noi with four remaining sub-districts: Siri Rat, Ban Chang Lo, Bang Khun Non, and Bang Khun Si. On 12 December 1991 a small part of Bang Phlat district was moved back to Bangkok Noi, creating the new Arun Amarin sub-district.

The National Museum of Royal Barges

on the northern rim of Khlong Bangkok Noi near its mouth to the Chao Phraya River houses the royal barges, used for Thailand's Royal Barge Processions on very special events, like 200th anniversary of Bangkok or the 60th anniversary of the accession of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Siriraj Hospital

is the on the other side of the khlong , which was the first western hospital in Thailand. It was originally named Wang Lang hospital, as it was built on the site of a palace (Thai: Wang), it was later renamed after Prince Siriraj Kakuta Bhandu, the beloved son of King Rama V, who died of dysentery only 18 months old. The hospital also houses several exhibitions, like the forensic museum.

Bangkok Noi railway station

or the former Thonburi railway station, directly next to the hospital, which serves the trains to the west, especially to Kanchanaburi. It was built in 1900 in European style. During World War II the Japanese used it as their logistics base and thus the station was destroyed. It was rebuilt in same style after the war. In 2003 the railway station was moved one kilometer westwards and the old building is now unused. The cleared space is allocated for expansion of the Siriraj hospital, however currently only used as a parking lot.


Thonburi railway station: erves the trains to the west, especially to Kanchanaburi. It was built in 1900 in European style. During World War II the Japanese used it as their logistics base and thus the station was destroyed.

Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan

also located at the southern rim of the Khlong, was originally called Wat Thong and dates back to Ayutthaya times. King Rama I had the temple restored and renamed it to its present name. It was a royal cremation site in the early Bangkok period, however the cremation site has been torn down and is now the location of the Bangkok Noi district office. The temple is most famous due to the murals, which are considered the most artistic of that time. In the Suwannaram Witthayakhom School next to the temple is also the district museum.

Wat Rakhang Kositaram Woramahawihan

is a major temple near the Chao Phraya river. It dates back to Ayutthaya times, when it was named Bangwayai. During the renovations done by King Rama I a huge bell was found and moved to Wat Phra Kaew, five smaller bells were installed in the temple as replacement. The bell also gave the temple its name, as Rakang is the Thai word for bell.

Traditional businesses

Bangkok Noi is known for several traditional goods and handicrafts, though most have disappeared.

In Trok Matoom opposite the Navy Dockyard bael fruits are boiled in syrup to make a special snack. The small side road (Trok) is named after the fruit, which is Matoom (มะตูม) in Thai.
Nearby Trok Khao Mao (lit. lane of shredded rice) is famous for producing shredded rice. The paddy gets immersed until it is soft, then roasted in a pan. It then get crushed in a mortar and mixed with rain tree leaves to give it green color. Finally it is winnow to separate out the chaffs. Due to the labor-intensive procedure there are only few producers left today.
Ban Chang Lor is a community renowned for its casting of Buddha images. Originally the bodies of the images were made from plaster and covered with black lacquer, until finally gold leaves are put on it. Nowadays the plaster has been replaced with rubber mold, and the lacquer with car paint, but the craftmanship of the community is still unchanged.
Within the Ban Bu community were the only remaining producers of stone-polished bowls, an old technique dating back to Ayutthaya times. Such bowls ceased to be in daily use since the 1950s, thus the technique nearly disappeared. The bowls are now only collectors' items or bought as souvenirs. However, the last remaining shop burned down in 2004.
A business inherited from the Muslim community of Ayutthaya are mattresses. However, as cotton-stuffed are no longer popular, such only few producers remain.

Shopping

The only major shopping center is Central Plaza Pinklao with a Central Department Store on Borom Rat Chonnani Road. Across the street from Central Pinklao is Major Cineplex. The multiplex cinema, which is actually in Bang Phlat district, is surrounded by many small shops selling low-cost clothes and other fashion items.

The Story Behind Anna's

The story of the English Anna Harriette Leonowens, governess to the children Of King Rama IV of Thailand King Mongkut, is a much documented and publicized one. It is a familiar story ( often over romanticized ) for stage and film productions such as “ The King and I “. However, Anna and the King himself are historical characters, largely misunderstood abroad. Anna Leonowens and her toddler son arrived in Bangkok aboard the steamer Choa Praya on March 15, 1862. She had been strongly recommended to the Siamese counsel in Singapore when King Mongkut expressed his desire for a teacher to educate his many children in the English tongue.

Anna's arrival in the mysterious land of Siam was at a time when most of Southeast Asia had become colonised by either England or France. In the midst of this upheaval in the region, Thailand remained un-colonised through the great efforts of King Mongkut. As one writer has commented “ ...He was one of the 19th centuries greatest Asian statesman, dedicated to serving his people and shielding them from European colonial rule”. This restaurant is named after Anna Leonowens to celebrate the great period in Thailand's history during the reign of the open-minded and brave King Mongkut who recognised the importance of learning English and opening his country to foreign trade. Through all his efforts to modernise and internationalise, he managed to preserve his nation's independence and culture.

The Patpong area is a couple of blocks between Silom and Suriwong Roads, just down from the Sala Daeng Skytrain Station and is home to the city's most popular and renowned night market, many fine shops, restaurants, five star hotels and the main draw of all, some of the city's most boisterous nightlife.
If you're visiting Bangkok, or are lucky enough to live here, you'll know that the main attraction is the area's world class bars.

The Patpong area as we know it today, was founded in the late 1960s when a number of bars were erected for the US servicemen who were enjoying R + R away from the battlefields of Vietnam. By day the area was home to the offices of international companies, including a number of airlines, but by night it transformed into something far more exciting.

When the troops pulled out in 1975, Thailand's increasing tourist trade discovered the area and since then Patpong has been a magnet for tourists and locals alike.

Alone in the most exciting Asian capital, men gravitate to the Patpong area in search of cold beer, fun and the company of Thailand's beautiful bar girls.

But Patpong is not just the one dimensional experience it was until the early '90s. The area has exploded and now features a vibrant night market popular with tourists and the area is home to a number of very good dining options.

Bangkok bar areas come and go, but almost 40 years on, it is Patpong where tourists and locals alike head for a night of fun in this Asian paradise.

Patpong has developed and it is not just known as a red light area. Patpong is more diverse than any of the city's other bar areas and is home to open air bars, live music venues, pool halls, gogo bars and other specialty bars. You truly are spoiled for choice.

No visit to Bangkok is complete without a night at Patpong, and should you find yourself moving to Bangkok or spending prolonged periods of time in Bangkok in the future, Patpong will certainly be one of the spots you spend a lot of time.

The night market at Patpong started something like 15 years ago and has been a major draw to the area since, and has in fact been responsible for the diversification of visitors to the Pattaya area. The market sets up late afternoon and is open for business around the time it gets dark, that is around 6:30 PM, through until around 2 AM.
Here you can find all sorts of interesting merchandise from Thai handicrafts to peter to knock-off designer clothes, watches and football shorts. Haggle away and you'll be amazed at how cheap you can get things for.

This is a great place to buy souvenirs, or a copy of that expensive Swiss watch you have always wanted. It is also the place with the newest counterfeit DVD movies in Thailand. Amongst the other contraband on offer is knives and other small weapons! Even if you're not in the market to buy something, the Patpong night market is fun to stroll around and browse before entering one of the bars for a nice, cold drink. Please note that bargaining is expected and you should be able to get the price down to about 50% of the original offer.
Patpong's night market is one of the few areas where you need to be aware of what is happening around you. The lanes are narrow and reports of pickpockets are not uncommon, although violent crime is very unusual in the area.

Patpong gets its name from the family that owns much of the area's property, the Patpongpanich (or Patpongpanit), immigrants from Hainan Island, China, who purchased the area in 1946. At that time it was an undeveloped plot of land on the outskirts of the city. A small klong (canal) and a teakwood house were the only features. The family built a road - now called Patpong 1 - and several shophouses, which were rented out. Patpong 2 was added later, and both roads are in fact private property and not city streets. (The so-called Patpong 3 and Soi Thaniya are not owned by the Patpongpanich family.) The old teak house was torn down long ago and the klong was filled in to make room for more shophouses. Originally simply an ordinary business area, the coming of the bars eventually would drive out most of the other businesses.

By 1968, a handful of nightclubs existed in the area, and Patpong found some use as a R&R (Rest and Recuperation) location for U.S. troops serving in the Vietnam War, although the main R&R area was actually along New Petchburi Road. In its prime during the 1970s and 1980s, Patpong was the premier nightlife area in Bangkok, and was famous then for its sexually explicit shows. In the mid 1980s the sois hosted an annual Patpong Mardi Gras, which was a weekend street fair that raised considerable money for Thai charities. By late 1980s, however, the Patpongpanich family had begun to rent out small lots in the middle of Patpong 1 for a night market.

Today, the nightlife areas of Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy provide strong competition for Patpong. However, Patpong is the only one within the official entertainment zones decreed by the Thai government in 2004, and thus may in future years be the only one allowed to remain.

Most Patpong go-go bars feature women dancing on a stage. The dancers (and even occasionally the serving staff) are generally available to customers willing to pay a bar fine to take them out of the bar; the fees for sexual services are negotiated separately. Some establishments advertising "massages" are in fact disguised brothels, and a few famous "blowjob bars" offer oral sex at the main bar or in back rooms.

Several upstairs bars still feature (technically illegal) sex shows, with women performing various creative acts. Perhaps the most notorious of these features women performing exotic feats involving their genitalia and projectile table tennis balls. Some of these second-floor bars are run by scam artists who lure tourists with offers of low prices and later present a wildly inflated bill along with a threat of physical harm should the bill go unpaid. The Tourist Police, usually stationed at Patpong 1 and Silom Road, can help in these situations.

Some establishments in Patpong employ kathoeys (or "ladyboys") either exclusively or as part of a mixed gender staff. As of 2005 the King's Corner bar on Patpong 1 was known for doing so. Unlike the kathoey bars in Nana Plaza, many of the staff at these Patpong bars are post-operative trans-sexuals.

With one or two exceptions, the gay bars in the Patpong area are not go-go bars, but simply traditional gay pubs, such as Telephone and The Balcony, which cater to both Thais and tourists. The commercial gay oriented go-go bars are mainly on Surawong Road or in small streets leading off Surawong.

Today, however, there are signs that parts of Patpong are turning away from the sex industry and providing other kinds of entertainment. There are now a number of live music bars that attract regular Thais and tourists as well as a number of very good restaurants. A new hotel has also opened on Patpong 2 offering very nice rooms at budget prices.

In recent years, Silom and Surawong have been taken over by the Patpong night market, making movement in the area difficult and filling the area with farang tourist couples and backpackers. Men selling pornographic DVDs have become an increasing nuisance in the area, as have touts who try to direct tourists into the bars offering sex shows. This night market is very touristy which means you are likely to pay a lot more than you would in a non-touristy market or have to barter very hard to get a good price.

EMPOWER is a non-profit community organization that operates in Patpong (and elsewhere) and serves women working there by offering classes in language, health, law and pre-college education, as well as individual counseling. It also lobbies the government on behalf of the women, in an attempt to extend regular labor protections to sex workers. Since the dancers and other female bar employees are invariably under-educated young women from rural areas, EMPOWER's work is appreciated by the women[citation needed], if not necessarily by all the bar owners.

Opened in early 2007 by the same owners of New Siam I and II, this friendly, family run hotel is the latest of their quality accommodations. The huge lobby that once housed a restaurant is being renovated into shops, a smaller restaurant, and a bar for the swimming pool that rests beside the river. Riverside rooms have nice wooden floors, some Thai art adorning the walls, and awesome views of the Chao Phraya River and the Rama IX bridge. Balcony rooms are a bit larger and have both bathtubs and showers. Rooms with no view are hardly worth it, unless you really enjoy the pool. The pool is available to non guests for a price, which might be a better option if you can't afford the rooms with river view.

The personable staff makes it a bit more attractive, so it's worth checking out anyhow.

[1] Massage parlours, or 'Aap ob nuat' as they are called in Thai, can be found in virtually every city in Thailand and, although they might differ in luxury, size and cost, they almost always have the same setup. This setup consists of a lobby with a 'fishbowl', a room where the girls (anywhere between 10 and 100+) are sat on several rows like in a stadium.
The girls are sometimes divided into different groups ('regular' and 'super star' for instance), each group will then usually have a different price as well.
The glass is supposed to be one way, but we seriously doubt this.
Besides these girls, more and more massage parlours are starting to provide 'sideline girls' as well. Instead of sitting inside the fishbowl, these girls sit in a lounge type of setting so you can talk to them before selecting.
In the lobby there are usually one or more 'papasans', men in suits that can tell you the specialties of the girls. If you have made your choice or if you have any special wishes tell these guys.
The rest of the setup consists of several rooms with a bathtub and bed. Some of the more lavish 'entertainment complexes' can also have restaurants, topless-bars and/or karaoke on the premises.
