There are over 31,200 Buddhist templesWat Benchamabophit in Bangkok spread around Thailand. In Thai we call them wat. They are grouped into two main groups: temples which are permitted to carry out religious functions, and those which are used only for living quarters for monks.

Temples are classified into two main categories: Royal Temples and Common Temples. The Royal Temples were either built by royalty or came under their sponsorship. In Thailand, there are about 200 Royal Temples though there are only six of the highest grade. These are:

1. Wat Phra Chetuphon, Bangkok 2. Wat Mahathat, Bangkok 3. Wat Suthat, Bangkok 4. Wat Arun, Bangkok 5. Wat Phra Pathom Chedi, Nakhon Pathom Province 6. Wat Phra Buddhabat, Saraburi Province

    Phra Chedi Wat Phra Buddhabat Takpha พระเจดีย์วัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้า - The splendid Wat Phra Buddhabat (from "Buddhapada", Sanskrit for the symbolic presence of Buddha) is a jewel of Thai architecture and one of the holiest places in the country. The temple gets its name from a footprint belonging to Buddha that is worshipped here.

    This ancient temple is located 9 kms. along the Ang Thong-Pho Thong route and 2 kms. along an access road. There is a large reclining Buddha image 50 metres long, lying in the open area.

    Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchavoraviharn (วัดพระปฐมเจดย์ราชวรวิหาร) The temple is locally known as “Wat Yai” or “Phra Thum”, the Big Temple. The present pagoda was constructed in 1853 to cover the ancient one, initiated by King Rama IV and it took 17 years to build. It was completed in 1870 during the reign of King Rama V. The temple is the first class royal temple with the biggest pagoda in Thailand.

    Wat Suthat วัดสุทัศน์เทพวราราม Wat Suthat is on Bamrung Muang Road in Bangkok and is famous for the excellent murals created in the reign of King Rama III. The Wihara (preaching hall) should be seen for its collection of gilded Buddha images.

    WAT PAK KLONG MAKHAMTAO - วัดปากคลองมะขามเฒ่า ชัยนาท Chainat

    Wat Pak Khlong Makham Tao วัดปากคลองมะขามเฒ่า an old monastery 25 kms, from Chainat township, is situated at the mouth of the Makham Tao Canal of Mae Nam Tajin, branched off the Chao Phraya River at Amphoe Wat Sing. The scenery in the compound is beautiful, lush and shady. The most important part of the temple is the mural paintings of Somdet Phra Borom Thur Khrom Luang Chumporn Khet Udomsak. They tell the story of the Lord Buddha.
